- If you are uncertain your pet has died, call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital.
- Place your pet on a clean towel, blanket, or absorbent pad.
- Move your pet to the coolest practical area while arrangements are made.
- Contact your veterinarian or a pet aftercare provider to discuss transportation and cremation choices.
- Have your pet's approximate weight and pickup location available when you call.
1. Confirm What Has Happened if You Are Unsure
If the passing was expected and you are certain your pet has died, it is okay to spend time saying goodbye. If you are unsure whether your pet has passed, or the death was sudden, unexplained, or involved a possible toxin or injury, contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital before making aftercare arrangements. An aftercare provider is not a substitute for veterinary guidance when the cause or status is uncertain.
2. Prepare a Clean, Cool Resting Place
Place your pet on a clean towel, blanket, or absorbent pad in the coolest practical area of your home. Keeping the body cool is important when time will pass before transfer. Choose a quiet location away from direct sunlight and heat. If several hours may pass or you need situation-specific handling guidance, ask your veterinarian or aftercare provider what is appropriate for your pet and circumstances.
3. Know What Information to Have Ready
When you call for aftercare, having a few details ready can make the conversation easier: your pet's name, species, approximate weight, the address where your pet is located, whether your pet is at home or a veterinary clinic, and whether you are considering private or communal cremation. If you do not know which cremation option you want, you can ask questions before deciding.
4. Decide Whether to Call Your Veterinarian or an Aftercare Provider
Your veterinarian can help coordinate aftercare, but families may also contact Legacy Grove directly; a veterinary referral is not required. If your pet is already at a clinic, ask whether the clinic can submit the aftercare case and coordinate pickup. If your pet died at home, contact the aftercare provider to confirm whether your exact address is within its pickup area and what transportation options are available.
5. Understand Private and Communal Cremation Before You Choose
Private cremation is intended for families who want their companion cremated separately and the cremated remains returned. Communal cremation is a shared cremation option in which individual cremated remains cannot be separated and returned. Ask any provider to explain exactly what its terminology means before authorizing care.

6. Ask How Your Pet Is Identified and Tracked
Before a transfer, families can ask how a provider identifies each pet, documents the handoff, records the selected service, and maintains identification through completion. Legacy Grove uses documented chain-of-custody procedures and secure care-status updates designed to keep the pet connected to the correct case while giving families and participating clinics visibility into the aftercare process.
7. Memorial Decisions Do Not All Have to Be Made Immediately
The immediate priority is arranging dignified care. Memorial decisions can be handled separately. For private cremation, families may consider the included return container, a personalized urn, clay paw impression, ink paw or nose print, or other keepsakes according to the options available for the case.
What Happens After Pickup?
After an accepted pickup, the transfer is documented and the pet is connected to the selected aftercare case. The case then moves through the applicable cremation and preparation steps. When private cremation is selected, cremated remains are prepared for return according to the family's arrangements. Legacy Grove's standard turnaround is 4–5 days after a pet arrives in our care; transportation schedules, holidays, memorial personalization, or special arrangements can require additional time.
